Difference between Geo-Informatics and Bio-Informatics
Geo informaticsĀ deals with the application of science and technology to both develop as well as utilize the infrastructure of information science on problems regarding geosciences, geography and other related divisions of engineering. Bioinformatics is concerned with the application of computer science and statistics in the area of molecular biology.
Geo-Informatics Course and Career Opportunities
Candidates who want to join this course should be graduates in Engineering, IT, Management or Commerce. Those candidates who have taken Science, Geography and Agriculture in addition to Computer sciences and Geology can also apply for this course. Those who are appearing in their final exams are eligible to apply too. Students who have finished this course can find employment with organizations like the ISRO, National Informatics Centre (NIC) and NRSA. Many municipal bodies as well as urban development authorities hire students of Geoinformatics too. Candidates of this field have an initial salary of Rs. 2, 50,000 a year. Professionals in this field may earn as much as Rs. 5, 00, 000/- annually.
Bio-Informatics Course and Career Opportunities
Candidates who aspire to join the course in bioinformatics must have a pass in their class 12 with Physics, English and biology. They must also have taken Chemistry as a subject. Those who have finished their course in this subject can find jobs with companies like Satyam, Silicon Genetics, and Wipro in addition to other companies like Accelrys, Reliance and IBM Life Sciences. It is possible for the candidates to find employment as Sequence analyst, Clinical pharmacologist, Database design and maintenance as well as Computational chemist and Bio-analysts. They can also get jobs as Lecturers in Colleges which offer this subject. Candidates who work in the private sector will have a salary of around Rs. 12,000 - Rs. 20,000 a month.
Key differentiators
While Geoinformatics is a branch of engineering which helps to solve the problems of geo science by developing and implementing different infrastructures of information science, Bioinformatics is the enhancement of gene based discovery of drugs and its development with the use of computer technology for the analysis of biological information.
