Re: Is 1st year the right time to start preparing for CAT? Strategy to be followed and books to be referred?
CAT - known as Common Admission Test is all-India national level test conducted by IIMs as entrance exam for admission to management programmes. Based on CAT percentile score, candidates are called for next stage of selection rejection process which usually consists of Group Discussion, Essay and Personal Interview (GDPI). CAT is multiple-choice based test with penalties for wrong answers.
From the year 2009, CAT is conducted online as Computer Based Test (CBT). Both CAT 2009 and CAT 2010 had 60 questions to be attempted in 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus 15 minutes tutorial. What is syllabus of CAT? This is the most frequent question asked when one starts preparing for CAT. CAT is a test with no predefined syllabus, however past trends suggest that CAT tests in general aptitude including Verbal Ability (English), Quant Ability (Mathematics), Logical Resoning (LR) and Data Interpretation (DI) skills. Similar to CAT, there are other admission tests - MAT, XAT, JMET and SNAP. There are some B-Schools (like IIFT, IRMA, FMS Delhi) which conduct their own exam. And there are state level entrance tests for admission to colleges in respective states. Verbal Ability (English) Vocabulary Based English Usage/Grammar Verbal Reasoning Reading Comprehension Quant Ability (Maths) Number Systems Percentages Profit and Loss Interest Speed, Time and Distance Time and Work Averages, Ratio and Proportion Quadratic Equation Logarithm Progressions Binomial Theorem Inequalities Permutation and Combination Probability Functions Set Theory Mixtures and Alligations Geometry Co-ordinate Geometry Trigonometry Mensuration |

Re: Is 1st year the right time to start preparing for CAT? Strategy to be followed and books to be referred?
Right time to begin preparations for CAT exam is from third year.
Self study is very important for cracking any competitive exam. Yoe should try to increase your speed gradually. Daily read the editorials of 2-3 good English newspapers and underline the difficult words. Look these difficult words in a dictionary. Make precise of the passages in shortest possible time. Daily learn a new difficult word from dictionary along with its antonyms, synonyms etc. For Mathematics, NCERT books of upto class 12th are sufficient. Just try to increase your speed of solving questions. You should buy the study material of a good coaching institute. Also you should join a test series. Try to give as many tests as you can. Analyze your performance the same day. |

Re: Is 1st year the right time to start preparing for CAT? Strategy to be followed and books to be referred?
Quote:
~CAT stands for Common Admission Test. By giving this exam you can pursue MBA from IIMs and other such top level B-Schools in India. Since it is conducted by the IIMs therefore its score is not accepted by any university but other A grade autonomous institutions accepts CAT scores. ~To appear for the CAT exam you need to score minimum 50% of marks at graduation level. If you are a final year student about to give the final exam or awaiting the result of the final year exam then also you can give this exam. ~There is percentage relaxation for the reserved category students. SC/ST candidates needs to secure 45% of marks at graduation level to sit for this exam. ~In the written examination generally MCQ type questions are asked and you have to answer all of them in just two and a half hours. There is no definite syllabus for this exam as such. It is more like an aptitude test which is aimed at testing the analytical skill of a student. ~Generally in the examination you will get questions from the following sections: **Verbal Ability **Reading Comprehension **Problem Solving **Data Interpretation ~You should not answer a question unless and until you are 100% sure about it because negative marking exists. For every wrong answer 1/4th of the total marks will be deducted from your original score. ~If you get selected then you will be called for the group discussion and personal interview session. Generally students who are able to get 99 percentile or above gets a call. As we all know that of all the MBA entrance exams CAT is the toughest to crack. So the preparation needs to be solid and productive right from the beginning itself. By choosing right books you can be one step ahead of your competitors. With the intention of helping you out a bit here i have shortlisted the name of few books here you can use to prepare for this exam. Go through it once. CAT Exam Books:- CAT Common Admission Test: Mastering the Verbal Ability by Ajay Singh Publisher: Arihant Publications Face 2 Face CAT Common Admission Test: 19 Years' (1993-2011) Topic-wise Authentic and Complete Solutions by B S Sijwali, Indu Sijwali Publisher: Arihant Publications How to Prepare for Logical Reasoning for the CAT Common Admission Test by Arun Sharma Publisher: Tata McGraw-Hill How to Prepare for Data Interpretation for the CAT Common Admission Test by Arun Sharma Publisher: Tata McGraw-Hill Hope this helps :-> :-> |
