Re: How to develop Communication skills?
One of the first things you need to do to improve your communication skills is actually to become a better listener.
You need to be an active listener and pay attention to what your audience is saying, either by their words, body language or action. This way, you increase your odds of offering a better response. Learn more ways to improve your communication skills here: http://EffectiveCommunicationAdvice.com |

Re: How to develop Communication skills?
I'm assuming by communication skills you mean a more formal way of communication in one or more recognised language. I'll be taking up English as an example. ( You can apply the same structure for any language and hopefully, it should work. )
English Case 1 : English is not your first language Now if English is not your first language, you can start by collecting your thoughts and forming a structure before you speak. To be honest, it will take some time. Start by having a one on one conversation with yourself. Preferably, while looking in the mirror. Example : let's pick up a topic - Is Virat Kohli the next big thing in Cricket? Now, before you get swayed away by emotions, take 5–10 seconds to think and form a structure. Then, try to present the same while looking at yourself in the mirror. This will reveal seven traits : A. Confidence You yourself will be in a position to gauge your confidence level whilst looking in the mirror. This again, will improve with time and practice. Again, if you have substantial awareness/knowledge regarding a topic you are likely to be confident. Keep practicing and this shall help you accentuate your confidence. B. Fluency The next ingredient that you have to keep in check is your fluency. Please, take a note it is absolutely fine to stutter initially. This will improve with time and practice. What is more important is to keep a check on how you put forth a conversation i.e Do you tend to get over excited on a familiar topic of yours and tend to speak fast? Or are you mumb when it comes to a more abstract topic! Remember, think in your native language - then collect your thoughts , structure them and then shoot in a more humble manner. Don't rush. C. Speed and Pauses The third factor that comes into picture is your speed and the pauses you take. This is different from fluency, but in a way compliments the same. Take pauses while you speak (1–2 seconds), this compliments your fluency , keeps in check your speed and gives you time to think. D. Pitch While we are at it, it is essential to keep a tab on your voice pitch. Neither too high, nor too low. Try to fine tune it to the level of pleasantness. No one likes a cacophony and neither is mumbling appreciated. E. Knowledge Any conversation for that matter has to make sense. And for a good communication it is imperative that you sound sensible. Obviously you can speak shit and sound cool. But to reach that level, you need to master the nuances of communication. Also, since the question is about improving communication skills, we shall stick to sensible conversation. Therefore widen your horizon of knowledge. You can do this by reading newspaper, watching movies, watching debates, reading on Quora , reading articles/blogs on social media etc whichever fits. F. Body Language/Gestures Last but not the least , always be vigilant about your body language - hand movements, facial expressions in particular. Reason - actions speak louder than words. They either give positive and pleasant vibes or make you sound like a douche. G. Vocabulary/Choosing the right word Prolly the last thing to worry about. Once you are at some level with the above parameters, make sure you improve your vocab. Essentially, by vocab I mean choosing a more appropriate word which correlates to the emotion or meaning. Eg : The sentence - “Ranbir is sharp eyed when it comes to dressing sense.” can be rephrased as “Ranbir dresses up with fastidious care.” Offbeat Tactic ( An important one ) - Try this at the end of day when you are done with the above mentioned activity. Visualize yourself and an eloquent speaker engaging in a conversation. ( Mr. Shashi Tharoor, Our Hon'ble PM - Shri Narendra Modi, Mr. Barak Obama, a friend of yours maybe etc ) - this can be performed in your leisure time. This will mentally challenge you to think and answer while maintaining your composure, which eventually will be reflected in your day to day life. Case 2 : English is your first language Since English ( or whatever language you intend to converse in ) is your first language , you already “ THINK” in that language. This makes things relatively easier for you. Since the most important part is half done ( structuring of thoughts) you will be able to converse rather smoothly and effectively as compared to the folks who belong to Case 1. What I mean to say is you will be able to improve on the above mentioned parameters relatively faster. But you have to improve, as there is always a room to be a better version of oneself. |
