Re: How to prepare for IPS Exam and what is the eligibility criteria?
To become IPS officer you will have to clear national level entrance exam called Civil Service Examination. It is conducted on annual basis by the Union Public Service Commission.
The forms of the Civil Service Examination which is also conducted for IAS and IFS are generally released towards the end of the year. The exams are conducted in the following year. Indian Police Service is related to maintaining law and order. Some job responsibilities include VIP security, law and order control especially during violence or riots, anti terror operations etc. Officers from the Indian Police Service are also selected for Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), National Investigation Agency (NIA), BSF, CRPF etc. Eligibility 1. You should be Indian citizen to apply for IPS. 2. Minimum qualification required is graduation degree like B.A, B.Com, B.Sc etc. 3. There is no specific percentage criteria. 4. The minimum age to apply for IPS is 21 years. 5. Maximum age to apply is 30 years. 6. The maximum age for OBC candidate is 33 years. 7. SC/ST can apply till the age of 35 years. Exam Pattern 1. Re: How to prepare for IPS Exam and what is the eligibility criteria?
IPS Preparation The candidates are recruited to the Indian Police Service (IPS), either through the Civil Services Examination, or through the selection/promotion of the officers from their state cadre designations. The entire activity is governed by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC), established by government of India. The committee under the UPSC meets every year to appoint the qualified officers against the number of vacancies available; the entire selection procedure is based on the Regulation 9 of the IPS recruitment rules. The recruitment to these services are done through 7 existing methods, such as, promotion, deputation, absorption, short term contract (ISTC), direct recruitment, re-employment, and composite method, which involves the simultaneous process of promoting the departmental candidates for higher cadre designations, besides the deputation of outsiders. The Civil Services Exam comprises three stages, preliminary exam; main exam and interview procedures. The Civil Services preliminary examination would be conducted in the month of May and the main exam would be conducted in the month of October/November, but these months are only indicative and are subjected to change, year after year. The preliminary examination consists of two objective type (multiple choices) question papers; one comprising questions from the ‘General Studies’ category, accounting to 150 marks; and the other paper comprising questions from the ‘Optional Subjects’, selected by the candidate and this accounts to 300 marks. Hence, once a candidate is qualified in the preliminary exam, then he/she will be facing the main exam. The main exam comprises 5 types of papers: Paper I & Paper II are language papers; Paper III is an essay paper accounting to 200 marks; Paper IV & V are based on general studies, constituting 600 marks (300 marks each); Papers VI, VII, VIII & IX are based on the optional subjects, adding to 1200 marks. Thus a candidate would be writing the exam for 2300 marks; the Paper I & Paper II are considered only as the qualifying papers and hence, marks are not allocated for these two papers. The important facts about the IPS preparation are discussed here: The minimum age to appear to the Civil Services examination would be from 21-30 years of age, as on 1st August of the year of examination. Any degree from a recognized university would be the minimum educational qualification required to appear for the exam; however, the candidates who are appearing in the requisite degree qualification are also eligible to appear. The candidate, who is already appointed to the other Civil Services, such as, IAS, IFS…would not be eligible to appear to the IPS examination. It is equally important to train oneself physically, as physical fitness and eligibility would be the one of the key factors of IPS selection. The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is expected to get amended from the year 2011. If it gets amended, then the candidates, who are appearing for the Civil Services examinations would face only one aptitude test question paper, instead of facing two objective type question papers in the Civil Services preliminary examinations, consisting questions from the ‘General Studies’ and the ‘Optional Subjects’. Re: How to prepare for IPS Exam and what is the eligibility criteria?
There are no special requirements for appearing for the IPS exam as it is part of the Civil Services examination. So if you fulfill the criteria for civil services exams you, by default, qualify for IPS exams as well. To be eligible for the civil services exams:
You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of filling the Civil Services (Preliminary) Exam form and not more than 30 years of age (various relaxations are available for different categories). You must possess a graduate degree in any discipline of any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of Central or State legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification. Candidates who are in the final semester or have taken their final degree exam but are awaiting the results can also appear for the IAS and IPS Preliminary examination provided they furnish their proof of degree while filling the Mains form. |
