Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
What is the eligibility for studying genetic engineering ? Is Maths compulsary ? I had never thought of it, neither my teacher told me.
see, The subjects I have studied in my +2 are as follows : Grade11 Grade 12 Physics Physics Chemistry Chemistry Biology Biology Mathematics Nepali English English Now tell me honestly am I eligible to go for genetic engineering or not ? Is math compulsary to go for genetic engineering or can we go for genetic engineering with PBC (Physics chemistry biology ) also ? I I can't go for genetic engineering without Maths how can I go for genetic engineering ? |

The eligibility for studying genetic engineering is the 12th with biology, chemistry and mathematics or a b-tech degree with science or molecular biology..you can do your degree in biotechnology, microbiology or biochemistry... Yes maths is compulsory as genetic engineering is having probabilities, statistics which are parts of maths... Telling you the truth for now I guess no..you are not eligible to go for genetic engineering.but you can do onething..First do your B-tech in Biotechnology then you can pursue your M-tech in biotechnology which offers specialization in genetic engineering.. BEST OF LUCK..... |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Yes you are right, maths is compulsory at 10+2 level if you want to pursue course in engineering stream, the same is applicable for genetical engineering too. You still stand a chance to work in the field of genetics if you can do a graduation/post graduation in streams like biochemistry and microbiology.

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Dear friend
Biology with genetics as its part and Maths are the subjects which you must have in your +2 to pursue genetic engineering but you must not loose heart because you do have an other option. You may go for a bachelors degree in Science/Molecular Biology to gain the eligibility for pusuing graduation and related degrees in the field of Genetics. |

Mathematics is must for this . Students are aimed to have a solid understanding of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, in addition to that of modern biology, after a systematic study of the theoretical and laboratory courses. It is emphasized that the students are also trained in research methods and experimental techniques of biology, being able to understand, at a preliminary professional level, on the new theories and technologies developed in the field of Life Sciences. Good luck |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
According to the prescribed eligibility for studying genetic engineering, you need to pass 12th standard with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or you need to have a bachelor degree in molecular biology.
So, dear mathematics is compulsary for studying genetic engineering. As you have mathematics in your 12th so you must eligible for applying genetic engineering. |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Remember One thing for doing Engineering in any branch you must have basic subject of MATHS.
and for doing graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) the basic eligibility criteria is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. That says that biology and maths are compulsory to do Genetic Engineering .. Suggestion:If you don't had these subject in 12th class then better you do B.Sc and go for higher studies like M.Sc and Phd will definitely take you towards your goal. |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
HELLO,don't get fear of it there is no compulsion of having maths background for become a genetic engineer.you can get it via having maths or bio.but you must have biology/biotechnology as in your 10+2 subjects.be graduate with biotechnology & you can chose genetic engineering for your post graduate degree.i'm b.sc. in biotech, only engineering means not only maths in genetic engineering we produce the genetically modified organisms(GMO).and use the restriction enzymes to replace the fragments there are no maths formula for it.do your master degree with renowned & affiliated college.
OK,BEST OF LUCK. |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
HI!
Sorry. you can not apply for graduate degree in genetic engineering since the basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology. But, don't loose heart there is one way in which you can apply for genetic engineering. In some institutes/universities the eligibility criteria is a bachelors degree in science or molecular biology. So, if you are really interested in doing genetic engineering you should do bachelors degree in science or molecular biology first & then appear in the entrance test for admission to the genetic engineering course. |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Quote:
A qualified genetic engineer, must have a graduate / postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields such as biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology or biochemistry OR a doctorate (PhD) from a recognised university, based on 2-3 years of his own research under the guidance of a professor/lecturer. The basic eligibility criteria for a graduate degree (BE / B.Tech) is 10+2 or equivalent examination, with Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as genetics as part of the biology OR a bachelors degree in science or molecular biology. Most institutes do not offer courses in Genetic Engineering as a special discipline but as a subsidiary in biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biotechnology offer specialisation in genetic engineering. Selection to the graduate courses ( BE / B.Tech ) is based on merit i.e the marks secured in the final exams of 10+2 and through entrance exams. Entrance to the IIT's is through JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through their own separate entrance exams and other state level and national level exams. Apart from the IIT's, some other famous institutes also recognize JEE scores for selection. Selection to the postgraduate courses ( M.Sc / M.Tech) in different universities is through an All India Combined Entrance exam conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through GATE in Two year/ 4 semester M.Tech courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech courses in Biochemical engineering and Biotechnology. All the best. |

maths is a compulsary subject if you want to enter into this stream because you have to qualify for the CET for which you need maths as a background in 12th.But with biology(science) as a background you can join in the MBBS stream all the best |

i'm studying M.C.A.(1st year) in wbut. i have completed my bca degree last year at the same university. i don't have mathematics at 2 level. rather i have computer application. that's why i have decided to join there. my combination was phy, chem, bio and computer application. So, my query is that do i ever appear to net or slate exam after completing my post graduation or whether it creates any problem for looking a job of programmer during campusing or not... reply me at [email protected]

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Since genetic engineering is not offered as under graduate subject in India institutes till now.You can opt for BIOTECHNOLOGY.
For which you have to apply for engineering entrance exams like AIEEE, iitjee, bitsat etc. Biotechnology is offered as dual degree course which is of 5 yr duration. |

Re: Is Mathematics compulsory for studying genetic engineering?
Hi,I m a 12th science student, i got 79% aggregate and 85% in PCMB (physics, chemistry, maths, biology). I have appeared for MHT-CET with only PCB, as my exam was not good, i expect around 150 marks in MHT-CET exam. I want to appear for BDS from a good college, will i be eligible for BDS? If not, then please suggest some other options in medical field (specially in Mumbai)! I belong to Open caste. Kindly reply!
