A stenographer's job is to take notes/dication/speech from his superior in symbolic signs called outlines and then type them in computer. It is really a hard task as there is always a slip between the cup and the lip - what I mean to say is that a stenographe may not properly listen to the dictator or may not know a difficult word used by the dictator in his speech. Moreover, the outlines drawn at the time of dictation in haste may not be easy to read at the time of typing. This is a peculiar art invented by Issac Pitman. One has to learn this art and being a stenographer I can say that it takes good time to learn - for me to become a good stenographer, one has to spend min. 5 years, if not more. Hope I am clear in my explanation. If not, please reach me at : deyshyamal2003@yahoo.co.in for more detailed explanation. thanks - shyamal
