Industrial / Production engineering is a sub branch of mechanical engineering. This is a specialized branch of engineering which deals with the various industrial procedures and policies. The demands for these engineers are extremely huge. They are taken in by companies with lots of factories and manufacturing units. The number of factories and manufacturing units in the country and abroad has gone up so much that there is huge demand for these engineers to handle the various processes.

My dear friend always go for basic Engineering branch i.e Civil, Electrical and Mechanical for Graduation. If you want PG then go for specialised branches VIZ., Aerospace, Marine, Production, Design, Heat Power, Structural , Power systems etc. You can go to any specialised field(for job or PG) if you have basic Branch but you are not allowed to apply for job or PG other than your specialised branch. For eg., B.E. Production are not allowed by Indian oil, ONGC for even Production jobs they want B.E Mechanical only. There are many more examples.

Always go for Basic Engineering branch VIZ., Civil, Electrical and Mechanical. You should go for specialization in PG only. You can choose area of specialization in job or PG only if you have basic branch degree. If you have graduation in other than basic branch you will have no choice in PG or job. For example Indian oil, ONGC does not allow B.E. Production for Production job also they want B.E. Mechanical only. B.E Production is more than 85 % equlvalent to B.E. Mechanical but then also you may not be allowed for M.E./M. Tech. in Aerospace Engineering, Heat Power, Design, Automotive Technology etc.

Production is a combine Branch of Mechanical & Management, very descriptive syllabus are there, while all of the Private Sector are looking for Specific Knowledge of any Field, (We Production & Industrial Engineer told, we are having knowledge of some of special Subject like Production Management, Quality Control, CIM and many more Subject related to MBA as well as Mechanical , While all of the Private Sector Companies told, if there are so many Mechanical Engineers then why should i Recruit you, They are also looking for Recruitment for MBA or Mechanical Engg.+ MBA rather than Production & Industrial Engineer) Not a Single MAHARATNA PSU's like IOCL, NTPC are allowed this Branch.
