Let me first define Relay which will give you an idea what actually relay does in transmission line or in any part of circuit either it is in generation, transmission or distribution.
Relays allow circuit to be switched by electrical equipment. The basic function of a relay is : >>On/off control. >>Logic control. >>Timer control. Now the distance relay or impedance relay functions depending upon the distance of fault in line. The relay operates on the difference between impedance of fault point and the point where relay is located. So whenever the impedance difference crosses the threshold value, it trips and opens the circuit or line to protect other elements in line. |
