Re: M.Sc in Oceanography is better or M.Sc in Meteorology?
Both oceanography as well as meteorology are very good fields where it is only survival of the fittest. You need to be excellent to excel in both the fields since both are challenging and result oriented fields. It is always advisable to pursue a course in which one is interested or is comfortable. The same thing applies to you as well. You should pursue course in the field where you are more interested and comfortable.
Keeping in mind the modern trend and the upcoming job opportunities of both the fields, it can be stated that the job opportunities of the oceanography field will be more than that of meteorology. The reasons are stated below :- - Oceanography has a broad field of application and implementation since many countries totally depend on ship and ocean trade. - Various oceanographic instruments are used by the nations for early prediction of earthquakes, tsunamis, sediment traps, etc. thereby opening up opportunities in the defence (naval) field. - Various government as well as private companies thrive in this field, thus the employment sector is large. - Meteorology is limited to certain number of laboratories and space research centers as well as weather forecasting stations. However getting chance in these is very difficult as the vacancy is very less. - In India, meteorology field is still in its infant stage, so many more years are required for this field to grow and give more number of employment opportunities. |

It is completely depends on candidates interest. They have to figure in which field they have more edge considering future job prospects.
Career either in oceanography or meteorology can surely secure lucrative jobs in India. Oceanography is branch deals with data collection and analysis, Investigating biology beneath sea water, weather cycle in ocean, to study geology in ocean, etc. Meteorology branch is bra deals with data analysis, ‘pure’ meteorology or weather forecasting , Measurements and instrumentation,Climate change,Statistics for weather and climate science, etc. |
