Annamalai University is the pioneer in offering courses through distance education mode of learning. The university offers a M.Sc. in Botany also. The course is of duration of two years and the exam is held in two months of the year- May and December. There is subject in the first year of the course called Pteridology, Gymnosperms and Paleobotany. The exam of the subject is of 100 marks and the duration is three hours. There are three sections in the paper. The first section has short answer type questions, second section has long answer type ones and the last section consists of essay type questions. In the first section all the questions are compulsory, while there are choices in the remaining two sections.
