Both astronaut and space research scientist are great career paths for average science students. However, there are some key differences between the two careers that may make one a better fit for you than the other.
Astronaut
  • Qualifications: Astronauts typically need a bachelor's degree in a STEM field, such as engineering, science, or medicine. They also need to have experience in a related field, such as flying airplanes or working in a research lab.
  • Duties: Astronauts are responsible for operating spacecraft, conducting experiments, and maintaining the International Space Station (ISS). They also need to be able to withstand the rigors of space travel, such as the lack of gravity and the high radiation levels.
  • Work environment: Astronauts typically work for government agencies, such as NASA or the European Space Agency (ESA). They may also work for private companies that are involved in space exploration.
Space Research Scientist
  • Qualifications: Space research scientists typically need a PhD in a STEM field, such as physics, astronomy, or astrophysics. They also need to have experience in a related field, such as working in a research lab or conducting experiments.
  • Duties: Space research scientists are responsible for conducting research on a variety of space-related topics, such as the formation of stars and planets, the evolution of the universe, and the search for life beyond Earth. They may also work on developing new technologies for space exploration.
  • Work environment: Space research scientists typically work for universities, government agencies, or private companies. They may also work as consultants or independent researchers.
Ultimately, the best career path for you will depend on your individual interests and skills. If you are interested in space travel and want to be a part of the team that explores the final frontier, then becoming an astronaut may be the right career for you. However, if you are more interested in conducting research on space-related topics, then becoming a space research scientist may be a better fit.
