The GATE Life sciences Paper is a three hour paper like the others and comprises of a total of 100 marks paper. There are only objective type questions in the entire paper with four options for each question. There is only one correct answer which has to be marked in the separate answer sheet by the supervisor. All the questions in the paper are from the syllabus itself.

There are 60 questions in the paper from which 20 questions carrying one mark each and another 40 questions carrying 2 marks each. These 40 have a higher level of difficulty. Only one answer is acceptable. There is negative marking where every incorrect response from the first 20 questions causes the candidate to lose half mark and every incorrect response from the remaining questions causes him to lose two third marks. All these marks are deducted from the total score of the candidate.

There is rough sheet provided at the end of the paper to do any kind of calculation or solving. The paper is mostly a speed and accuracy test which requires a lot of practice because the student should be able do all calculations etc mentally to save time and complete the paper.
