Gujarat University offers a two year based course of Diploma in Linguistics having a total of four semesters. The name of some of the papers in the course are English Grammar- 1 and 2, Phonology & Morphology, Syntax & Semantics, Linguistics & Related Discipline, Proposal or introduction (optional—discuss with supervisor), Draft one of literature review, Draft one of methodology, Application for ethical approval (if necessary), Collecting and analyzing data, Draft one of findings, Complete draft including introduction, conclusion, list of references, appendices, etc. Basically the course is divided into two parts, namely Part I which is covered in the first year and Part II which is covered in the second year.

Each of the paper in each semester carries a maximum of one hundred marks. The Department of Linguistics of the Gujarat University offers two subsidiary based papers as namely at M.A. level, And P.G. Diploma in Linguistics. Each of the paper in each of the semester has both optional as well as compulsorily based questions to attempt. The question paper is divided into three segments and offers a range of questions from the syllabus. Linguistic analysis of a language is the most important part of the syllabus of the all of the papers in any of the semesters.
