The current name of Sidhhu Kanhu University is Sido Kanhu Murmu University and its headquarters is located at the city of Dumku, which is considered as the second capital city of Jharkhand state.

The university was formed in the year 1992 on the 10th of January under an act of Bihar Legislative Assembly. The name of the university was changed in the year 2003 under Jharkhand State Universities Act 2000. The university was separated from Bhagalpur University and it is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

The UGC Act has also recognized the university under sec. 12 (B). The university is offering vocational, bachelor and master’s degree courses through four of its faculties namely commerce, science, social science and humanities. Sidhhu Kanhu University aims at extending and promoting quality education facility in backward and tribal areas in the state of Jharkhand. The university was formed with the main purpose of providing quality education to the poor students of the Santhal Parganas thereby offering them with the facility of easy access to education.

The university also aims at conducting research in different areas of education. Of the six constituent colleges working under the university, four colleges are recognized by an Act of the University Grants Commission. The faculty of humanities and social sciences functioning under the university has four departments each and the science department has five departments through which post-graduation and under-graduation courses are offered by the university.
