Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeet came into existence in the pre-independence era in India and the institution was established with the resolution of keeping itself away from the grants and recognition offered by the British Government. Even though, the university came into existence before independence, it got recognition as Deemed University only in the year 1963 from the University Grants Commission. An initiation was made by the Chief Minister of the Uttar Pradesh to make Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth as a Statutory University and his ambition became fruitful in the year 1974 on the 15th of January.

Before the year 1995, the university was just called Kashi Vidhapith and it received its present name in honor of the father of the nation as Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth in the year 1995. The university was actually established in the year 1921 on the 10th of February by the Father of the Nation on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami during the non-cooperation movement of the freedom struggle. The colleges affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth are located in different districts of the state of Uttar Pradesh like Ballia, Varanasi, Chandauli, Sonebhadra, Mirzapur and Sant Ravidas Nagar. The university has four hostels under its control for offering accommodation to the students from other parts of the country.
