Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalaya came into existence in the year 1983 and the university was established by the Former Chief Minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh Sri N.T. Rama Rao with the objective of offering training to the women students and to inculcate leadership qualities among young women. Initially, when the university began its operations, there were only 25 staff members and 300 students. Now the university has a student strength of more than 2700 students and a staff strength of nearly 250.

The university is offering education under three main schools of education namely school of Engineering & Technology, School of Social Sciences, humanities and management and school of Science. Different department like zoology, sericulture, organic chemistry, business management, communication & Journalism, education, industrial biotechnology, botany, etc… are functioning under these schools of education. The university has earned four-star status from the NAAC and it works towards its mission statement of emancipation of women through acquisition of knowledge. Thus, the university works towards the empowerment of women through education.
