The Capital city Shillong, can be considered as the major educational hub in the north-eastern state, Meghalaya. Education system of Meghalaya is improving at a rapid rate due to the effort taken by the Meghalaya Government. The Universities of Meghalaya offer quality education touching all streams of education. Students can undergo undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs from the major Universities of Meghalaya.

There exist two Universities in the state of Meghalaya for the development of education in the state. The two Universities are:

• North Eastern Hills University
• Martin Luther Christian University

These Universities offer better infrastructural facilities along with experienced and well qualified teaching faculties to aspirants. These Universities can be considered as a major education center not only to aspirants of North Eastern states but also to those of whole country.

North Eastern Hills University

North Eastern Hills University can be considered as the major University of the State to which most of the Colleges are affiliated. This University which, is shortly called as NEHU was notified in the year 1973. The University having decades of experience, offers graduate and post graduate courses in Technical education, Arts, Science, Law and so on. The University also offers research programs on various streams of study. The North Eastern Hills University offers affiliation to 53 Colleges of the state.

The University offers hostel facilities for faculty members and for other working staffs. They provide separate residence facilities for male and female students of the University. All departments of the College are connected through high speed internet facility. Along with internet, telecommunication facilities are included as an alternate means of communication. The University has Scientific Instruction Centre, a Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre, and Guest House-cum-Seminar Complex as additional sections.

Martin Luther Christian University

Martin Luther Christian University or MCLU is a self financing University, which was established in the year 2005. The uniqueness of the University is that it offers a lot of professional courses relevant to present day. The courses offered by the university are helpful for the students to grab a bright job in future. The University offers 16 graduate and post graduate courses in diverse fields. Some of the courses offered by the University are B. Sc, BBA, BCA, BSW, and so on.

These two Universities have a great role in upgrading the literacy rate of Meghalaya. The universities in Meghalaya impart education in such a way that students become much aware about the various socio-cultural, political and economic issues taking place in the world.
