Obstetrician - How to become an Obstetrician?


Obstetrics is that specialization in the surgical medicine which involves the study of reproductive systems of the females in two conditions, during pregnancy and non-pregnant state. A course in this field provides the graduates with training in surgery and medical care of women during pregnancy and post pregnancy. The physicians specialized in this field are called Obstetricians. These professionals offer medical or surgical assistance to female in the following areas:-

  • Prenatal care
  • Postnatal care
  • Preventive care
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases

Qualifying Exam

The Obstetrician usually requires a minimum qualification of graduation from a medical school in this specialized field. They need to pursue the graduation from any of the reputed institutions and then obtain the doctor of medicine in the specialization, obstetrics or gynecology which is of four year duration. After this they have to undergo residency programmes in obstetrics/ gynecology. Those successfully completing all these procedures can then practice as licensed obstetrician in various hospitals.

Students who have obtained pass in the higher secoPh.Dry examinations with PCB from any reputed schools can apply for the pre-medical courses. The admission to the various colleges may be based on the entrance test organized by the concerned university. Those who have qualified in this four year programme can go for the doctor of medicine course in obstetrics or gynecology.
