The main idea behind its establishment was to provide safe and secure detention of the prisoners committed to Prison custidy. Prison department was founded with the aim of providing minimum standard of living or treatment to the prisoners and also to reform them by involving them in various educational activities. Director General of Prisons is the head of the Prison Department. The Director General of Prisons is assisted by Additional Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Prisons.
