How to Prepare for UPSC Geologist Exam?

The Geologist Exam is carried out by the UPSC for selecting efficient candidates to various posts. Some of the posts are Hydro geologist, Geologist, assistant Geologist and Assistant Hydro geologist in India. The candidate can submit an application online for Geologist exam through UPSC link. They can also get hold of the application form from selected post offices all through the country. The candidate should have completed a Master degree in Marine Geology or Geology from any renowned university or Institute in the country.

Structure of the Geologist Exam

The Geologist entrance exam will include two different stages. The first stage is a written exam and second stage is the interview. The questions are from English, Geology Paper I, II, III and Hydro-geology.

Syllabus of the Geologist Exam

The General English paper carries 100 marks and duration of this paper is two hours. In this section, the candidates are required to write the short essay in English. The questions are arranged in a systematic manner as to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge on English usages. The question will include basic grammar, idioms and phrases, correct use of words and many more.

The Geology paper I cover all the syllabus of geology, geo-morphology, Palaeontology, Geotectonics etc. The Geology Paper I carries 200 marks and duration of this paper is 3 hours. The Geology Paper II will get questions from subjects like Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry. Students will also be tested in their knowledge in Environmental Geology and Geochemistry. The duration of this paper is 3 hours and it carry utmost of 200 marks. The Geologist Paper III wraps up the course outline of Ore genesis, Mineral discovery, Indian mineral sediments etc. The questions will also come from mineral economics, engineering geology, Geology of fuels. The duration of this paper is 3 hours and this carries 200 marks. The Hydrogeology covers well hydraulics and design, source etc.

The questions will also come from Groundwater chemistry, happening and allocation of water, underground water investigation, problems and management. The duration of this paper is 3 hours and it carries maximum of 200 marks. The interview carries maximum of 200 marks. The candidate should allot time for each subject and cover all these portions thoroughly. Moreover, they should study previous year question paper and practice some mock tests. This will help to know your preparation level and they can rectify their mistakes.
