Astronomy is defined as the study of bodies and phenomenon’s that exists outside the earth’s atmosphere. It even includes the physical and chemical properties of such heavenly bodies and phenomenon’s. In general, Astronomy refers to the study of everything as the Universe is so large and Earth forms a very minute portion of the Universe.

Different fields in astronomy

Astronomy consists of different fields such as Cosmology, Astrometry, Planetology, Radio Astronomy, and Mathematical Astronomy. Cosmology deals with the study of the Universe as a whole. Astrometry is concerned with the measurement of large distances between various heavenly bodies. Radio Astronomy deals with the study of the Universe with the help of telescopes. Planetology is concerned with the study of planets that falls within our solar system. Mathematical astronomy deals with various calculations and statistics to describe the universe.

Contributions to mankind

The field of Astronomy has led to many of the scientific discoveries such as rocket engines, the low-noise radio receivers, the atmosphere, the satellites that helps in communication and information gathering such as on climate, whether etc. These discoveries have revolutionized human life and have made human life easier. It has helped in predicting the weather which helps in time of calamities to save human lives.

The astronomy course

The astronomical course equips a student with great deal of information on the origin of the universe, other planets in our universe, satellites, meteors, meteorites and various other bodies and phenomenon. The course makes the students capable enough to become a professional who can study the universe and research on various galaxies, mergers and collisions. This helps us to predict various happenings in the universe which will impact the life on earth.

With the advancement in technology we have been able to send probing machines to our nearby planets and satellites to study their chemical and physical nature. As the technology advances further we will be able to send such missions to far off planets and even will be able to send human beings to these planets. Such missions will help us to study the possibility of life on other planets. In addition to this it will help us to discover elements that are scare in earth and which are of great use to us. Even though this may seem to be an imagination, there are organizations which are looking into such probabilities. So the course of astronomy will create professionals who are capable of handling such expeditions and experiments for the benefit of the mankind.
