Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University was previously called as Garhwal University and it was established in the year 1973 on the 1st of December to fulfill the requirement of the local people for a university. It was established under the provisions of UP State Universities Act, it got its present name in the year 1989, and subsequently it received the status of central university through an ordinance. The university is one of the largest universities in India with three campuses and a number of affiliated colleges. The university is offering educational services to 7 out of 13 districts in the state of Uttarakhand. It has close educational relationships with a number of premier educational institutions, the best teachers and the state-of-the-art research facilities. The pollution free and impressive campus of Garhwal University offers infrastructural facilities like student welfare committee, guesthouses, shopping centers, medical facilities, telephonic services, courts for games like tennis, volleyball, badminton and basketball, music room, library, recreation rooms with televisions, cafeteria and 22 hostels with a capacity to accommodate 3000 students. The University is offered with B++ status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and the university admits students on direct admission basis and on the basis of entrance examination as well for some of the courses. The university offers education through Hindi medium and it offers several UG, PG and research courses in professional, applied and basic streams.
