Lalit Narayan Mithila University was formed in the year 1972. The year 1968 is considered as a milestone in the records of this university since only during this a team from University Grants Commission paid a visit to Darbhanga to examine the chances of setting up a university.

On the basis of the report submitted by the team by considering the socio-economic background of Darbhanga, this university was set up with its headquarters at Darbhanga. Initially, the name of the university is just Mithila University and colleges in the division of Kosi and Darbhanga that were earlier under the jurisdiction of Bhagalpur and Bihar University were brought under this university.

After the death of Pt. Lalit Narayan Mishra, the name of the University was changed as Lalit Narayan Mithila University. The list of colleges affiliated to the university is as follows:

Initially, Lalit Narayan Mithila University started functioning in Mohanpur House. But, after some years, the university was shifted to its present campus with splendor and grandeur buildings known as ‘Kameshwarnagar’. This name was given to the campus in honor of the person who was the previous owner of the campus.

The university is offering UG, PG, certificate courses, diploma courses, P.G. Diploma courses, M. Phil, Ph. D and vocational courses as well. Apart from these courses, the university is also offering certain courses like computer application, Bio-technology and M.B.A under the category of self-financing courses.

The university is offering different courses through 21 educational departments functioning in the campus. The campus includes several facilities like hostels, library, etc…
