Even though, the job description of the position of constable cannot be explained in some countries, in other countries like India, Scotland, Australia, Canada and England, constable is the entry-level uniformed position in the Law Enforcement Department.

Educational Qualification required for entering into the position of Constable:

For the position of Constable, candidates must have completed their high school/matriculation or 10th standard from an approved education board in India.

What is the mode of selection followed by government organizations for recruiting constables?

In most of the states in India, selection of candidates for the post of constable is done based on the performance of the candidates in written test, physical measurement test, physical efficiency test and interview.

Every year, Government of India’s Staff Selection Commission, conducts the Central Police Organization examination in the month of September/December. Initially, candidates will have to take up Physical Standard Test and Physical Efficiency Test and only the candidates who succeed in these tests can take up the written test followed by medical examination.

Physical Standard Test:

As far as Physical Standard Test for the position of Constable is concerned, candidates should fulfill the following requirement to qualify for the written test:

• Male candidates: Minimum height requirement is 170 cms

• Female candidates: Minimum height requirement is 153 cms

• Chest (only for male candidates):

o Unexpanded – 80 cms

o Expanded – Minimum expansion 5 cms

• Weight (Both for male and female): In proportion with age and height according to medical standards

Physical Efficiency Test:

On successful completion of physical Standard Test, candidates will have to take up Physical Efficiency Test, the requirement for qualifying in this test is given below:

• Male Candidates:

o Long Jump: 11 Feet (within three chances)

o High Jump: 3 1/2 Feet (within three chances)

• Female Candidates:

o Long Jump: 9 Feet (within three chances)

o High Jump: 3 Feet (within three chances)

Written Examination:

Candidates completing the above two exams, are allowed to take up written test, which includes one paper for 100 marks. The paper will have 100 objective type questions with one mark for each question. This paper includes four parts, namely general intelligence & reasoning, general knowledge & general awareness, Elementary mathematics and English/Hindi.

Medical examination:

Candidates scoring the required cut-off marks in the above three examinations, will be called for medical examination, which includes vision test and to check whether candidates have good body and mental health.
