Sikkim Manipal University of Health, medical and technological sciences, which is shortly called as Sikkim Manipal University or SMU was formed in the year 1995. The university is the initial private-government proposal in the state of Sikkim in India. The university is approved by Government of India and recognized by University Grants Commission.

The university is offering superior teaching to the learners belonging to the north eastern and northern part of the country. According to a review by the popular ‘competition success’ in the year 2009, the university’s technology institution is ranked as the 8th topper among the top university engineering colleges in India and it has also acquired the 27th rank in the top 50 engineering colleges in India.

In addition to offering courses through its constituent colleges, the university is also offering courses through distant education and the degrees offered through distant education are approved by the Distance Education Council. The university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Association of Indian Universities.

Sikkim Manipal University aims to promote, support and undertake development in academy education, to carry out all activities that would result in the development of the university and to offer for research and for development and dissemination of knowledge through community and extension services.

In addition to the main campus at Gangtok, the university has another campus at Majitar as well. The university was chosen as the best distance learning institution under efficiency and results in India at the August 2010 edition of Careers 360 Magazine and it was also chosen as the third best distance learning institution by the same magazine. The university also won the ‘digital learning ICT enabled university of the year’ award in the year 2009.
