Indira Gandhi Agricultural University also called as Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, was formed in the year 1987 on the 20th of January after separating from Jawahalal Nehru Krishi Vishavidyalaya located at Jabalpur. The university’s jurisdiction extends to the whole state of Chhattisgarh.
The university was established with the objective of making provisions for education in agricultural and related fields, promoting the action of research specifically in agricultural and related fields and taking up field extension programmes for appropriate transfer of technology. Five faculties of education are functioning under the university and they are agriculture, agricultural engineering, diary technology and animal & veterinary husbandry and a total of 18 departments are functioning under these faculties of education. Indira Gandhi Agricultural University admits students to under-graduation courses on the basis of marks secured in the pre-admission test conducted by C.G. Board situated at Raipur. Apart from under-graduation courses, the university is also providing Ph. D and post-graduation courses and for these courses starts on the month of September every academic year.
The campus of the university includes a central library called as ‘Nehru library’, where a total of nearly 1000 books are preserved. In addition to the books, 112 periodical magazines are also available for the students of which 23 are magazines are from foreign countries. The library provides services like photocopying, documentation, etc… In addition to the library, the university also offers hostel facilities to the students and hostel facilities are available in constituent colleges as well.
