Netaji Subhas Open University shortly called as NSOU is a open university offering distance education and it is operating from the eastern part of the country. The university holds the pride of being the 58th largest university in the world. It was established in the year 1997 and it is a public university operating from an urban campus in the Indian city of Kolkata. The university was established in the year 1997 with a view to honor the Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth centenary. The university is located in a place called Wood Park, which was once the residence of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The medium of instruction followed by the university is English and Bengali and it is modeled in the format of Open University, UK and Indira Gandhi National Open University of India.
Netaji Subhas Open University has 191 study centres and it is planning to open more study centres in the future with the objective of meeting the unmet, more specifically the disadvantaged sector of minority and rural community with application of information technology. The study centres of the university will be providing wider scope for online, professional and vocational courses in addition to the already offered M. Phil and Ph. D level courses.
