Silchar Medical College was established in the year 1968 and the institute was previously affiliated to the Assam University. From the year 2010, it was brought under the affiliation of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences located in Guwahati. The approved intake capacity of the institution for MBBS course is 65 students per year and admission to this course is done based on entrance test conducted by all India and state level selection bodies.
