Gynecology deals with the study of female reproductive system. Gynecologists are the doctors who deal with several issues affecting female reproductive system like gynecological diseases, pregnancy and fertility. Like all other doctors, gynecologists also perform physical examination and diagnose tests. They will decide the treatment options after discussing the test results with their patients. They use different treatment procedures like pap smears, biopsies, hysterectomies, tubal ligations, and ophorectomy to cure the patients having gynecological disorders. Different gynecological disorders handled by gynecologists are dysmenorrhoea, cancer, urine incontinence, amenorrhea and prolapse of pelvic organs. Women can consult gynecologists about the use of contraceptives.

Qualifying Exam

Gynecologist need to have Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology to practice in any Hospital. To obtain this post graduation degree, one should complete their MBBS course successfully from any Institution approved by Medical Council. They should also need sufficient experience in this field to excel in their career. Some gynecologists specialize in obstetrics and focus on only pregnancy care. Other gynecologists specialize in gynecological cancers and suggest many treatment options.

Who are eligible to apply?

Candidates who aspire to pursue MBBS course should qualify the entrance test conducted by the concerned authority. Candidates who have passed plus two or its equivalent with the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible to apply for this entrance test. Such candidates also need sufficient percentage in the plus two or it equivalent examination. Admission to post graduation course will be given on the basis of the marks obtained in the entrance test and qualifying exam.

Skills required for a gynecologist

Gynecologists should have active listening skills to understand the disabilities and concerns of the patients. They should have considerable critical thinking abilities and problem solving skills. They should have the ability to assess the disease correctly even though the patients provide incomplete information. They should possess good knowledge about different treatment procedures available for various gynecological disorders. They should be able to take critical decisions particularly in the case of pregnancy conditions. They should possess strong communication skills and service mentality.
