Twenty years back from today, there was a time when all most eight percent of the people who were interested in studies actually went on for a higher educational qualification such as PhDs. But the scenario has changed a lot. Today, just a few who have exceptional interests in studies or those who have firm determination to go into the research field opt for a high level educational qualification such as Ph.D.

The main reason for this decrease in demand for the PhD is the growing urge to earn money in the young generation. The major companies like the MNCs, the IT companies’ etc. give more privilege to the candidates having one or two years work experience in comparison to the candidate having a PhD degree. Due to this market demand, major student population tries to get a job experience just after their graduation or post graduation.

Moreover, if a student sees his batch mates working and earning money at a low age or just after graduation, he will also develop the same urge to earn money rather than to go on for higher studies in a stretch.

Today’s young generation has a strong feeling of leading their life on their own i.e. not being dependent on their family or relatives. Pursuing a higher educational qualification means giving some more years to study. So, in that duration they are somehow dependent on their family for financial support. And most of the young people today are against this thought of being dependent financially at an age of about 25, when others of this age work and get a handsome salary.

There is another factor of laziness that has associated itself to the young generation. People have a tendency of studying less and earning more. Though this tendency lies to just a small proportion of the society. So because of all the above mentioned reasons, the demand for Ph.ds has decreased a lot and it is actually out of trend.
