Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (Inspire) is one of the novel programs offered by Department of Science & Technology (DST) (under the Ministry of Science and Technology).  Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) is one of the components of Inspire. In this scheme a total of 10,000 scholarships are provided for students in natural/ basic sciences. Selected students are offered scholarship of Rs. 80,000/- per year.


Eligibility Requirements for Inspire Scholarship

Aspirants studying courses in natural/ basic sciences are eligible to enjoy the benefits of inspire scholarship. More clearly, candidates pursuing bachelor degree in science or integrated courses like B.Sc- M.Sc /MS are eligible to apply for the scholarship program. Eligible candidate must have already joined in any of the recognized colleges or universities in India.  Those pursuing courses related to engineering, medicine, applied science, or technology is not eligible to participate in the scholarship program.

Selection Procedure for Inspire Scholarship

Those who satisfy certain requirements are only selected for inspire scholarship.

  • He or she must be a good performer (calculated based on cut off marks for each state) in XII class State or Central Board Examination
  • Based on candidates performance in competitive examinations
  • Candidate must be a receiver of various scholarships and medals

Marks in competitive exams like the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT, All India Engineering Entrance Exam, and All India Pre Medical Entrance Test are considered while scrutinizing the applications received. Here also, the rank of the candidate must be one among the top 1000.

Recipients of any of the scholarships and medals are also considered primarily for the selection process.

  • Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS)
  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)
  • National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
  • Science Olympiad Medalists

Candidates pursuing natural/ basic science degree courses from any of reputed institutes as mentioned below are also given preference for selection.

  • Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences (DAE-CBS)
  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)
  • National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER)
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)

Value and Duration of Inspire Scholarship Support

Eligible candidates selected for scholarship program will be paid with a total value Rs. 80,000/- per annum. The scholarship amount of Rs. 60,000/- is provided directly to the candidate. Later amount of Rs. 20,000/- is transferred to the concerned institution from where the candidate is pursuing the course. This amount is meant for meeting the requirements of summer time project. The same is offered for a maximum period of five years. B.Sc candidates can enjoy the benefit for 3 years where as integrated M.Sc/M.S students can have the value support for 5 years.

    I have passed higher secondary from W.B.C.H.S.E. in the year 2009 with 83.6% & graduation in chemistry with 67.75% from CU in the year 2012. Am i eligible for DST-INSPIRE fellowship? Can I apply now?
