Every year hundreds of thousands of students sit for India’s toughest examination- The Civil Services Examination. The exam is held in two stages. First a screening prelim is there and then the main examination. Candidates who clear the prelims are eligible to sit for the mains. Candidates can choose their optional subject from a range of subjects provided by UPSC. Physics is one of the subjects. The pattern of the main exam of Physics is given here.

Paper Pattern

The exam carries a total of 300 marks and the time given for the exam is three hours. This is a conventional exam i.e. there are subjective questions. The questions paper is given in both English and Hindi. Students can write in any of the two languages but they have to specify the language in their form before the exam. The paper is divided in two sections. There are four questions in each section. Question 1 and question 5 are compulsory. Students can answer any three more questions taking at least one from each section. All the questions are of equal marks and carry 60 marks each. The marks can be divided in smaller questions within a question.
