Draftsman and architect may work in same construction projects and sometimes they work together to implement projects. Even though they work in the same field, their work nature and skills differs a lot. Draftsman’s work involves wide application that can be applied to many other fields. Architect’s works tend to involve more in the construction projects only.

Draftsman

Draftsmen jobs comprises of the conversion of design ideas to the realistic pictures. That work may include many types of drawings like plans for buildings, diagram for machines, etc. These works are sometimes called the blueprints for buildings, sceneries, machines, roads and so on. The blueprints serve as the guide for builders or manufacturers. The draftsmen are efficiently used by many people such as real estate developers, manufacturers, estate developers or even the architects. To become a draftsman one should pursue a high school graduation in related field or two year degree programme in computer aided drafting and design. Many reputed technical schools and community colleges offer these courses. There has been always a great demand for the skilled draftsman in many industries. Since the career opportunities are plenty for them in the present scenario, they need good skills and talent to perform successfully in this field.

Architect

Architects’ job is to design and build the infrastructure for other people. The structures that they design and build include homes, offices, complexes, skyscrapers, etc. In addition to the designing and construction jobs, they need to ensure the safety and proper functioning and also they have to deal with financial matters of the structures. In short they have to involve in the overall process from initial stage to the project completion. These professionals use the computer technology facilities such as CADD, BIM, etc. and other software tools to design or create the construction plans. These drawings must ensure the zoning laws, building codes and the fire regulations. To become an architect one needs a minimum qualification of bachelor’s degree in architecture. They also need some experience in this field to get a better job in the reputed companies. Various opportunities are there for these professionals nowadays due to the boom in the infrastructure and real estate industries. Apart from the educational qualifications the architects also need variety of skills such as communication skills, analytical mind, strong knowledge in computer technologies, etc.

Key differentiators between a Draftsman and an Architect

  • Draftsmen’ job includes wide areas and they can be applied to many other specialized fields whereas an architects’ job is limited to the construction projects.
  • Draftsmen drafts the realistic designs of the ideas and concepts for buildings, machines, etc. defined by others whereas the architects designs the plans for the infrastructure such as homes, office buildings, etc.
  • The drawings of a draftsman serve as the guide for manufacturers or builders whereas an architect has to involve from the initial designing stage to the completion of the project.

Although the draftsman and architects works in the same field or sometimes they have work together for the implementation of a project, the nature of their work and skills required for them differs in many aspects.
