Naval Architecture is one among the specialized areas in Architecture. Even though both professions deal with architecture, the area of application is much different. Naval Architects involve in design, manufacture and maintenance of ships and other marine installations. They also engage in architectural features of boats as well as other seafaring vessels. Architect involves in areas of planning, construction and supervision of buildings.

They are responsible for the aesthetics and well being of buildings.

Naval Architect Courses and Job Opportunities

A four year course in Naval Architecture should be pursued by those who have strong desire to become a Naval Architect. This study program is offered only by a few Colleges in India. Another option to become Naval architect is to undergo four-year diploma program on Ship Building Engineering. This course is offered only by Institute of Ship Building, Goa and Naval College of Engineering, Pune in India.

After completing B. Tech in Naval architecture, aspirants can go for training programs in naval ship design under Indian Navy. The two year training program is offered by the Naval College of Engineering. Higher study specializations such as Marine Technology and Ocean Technology are also offered by IIT’s in Kharagpur and Chennai respectively. These professionals can find a lot of job opportunities in organizations operating with marine vessels, offshore structures, Ships, Boats and so on.

Architect Courses and Job Opportunities

To get employed as Architect, the aspirants have to undergo Bachelor degree in Architecture. The duration of the course is 5 years. The diploma courses in Architecture are also offered by different Colleges in India. This qualification is enough to obtain an entry level job in any of the construction firms in India. Knowledge in CAD software and technical drawing skills are desirable to get enrolled as a professional Architect.  The Master’s in Architecture is the higher study option immediately after B. Arch. The higher study options help professionals to grab high-profiled jobs in firms involved in architecture.

Key Differences between Naval Architect and Architect

  • Naval Architect is involved in the architectural design of ships and other off shore structures where as Architect focus on the design and manufacture of new buildings, restructuring of existing buildings and so on.

The nature and responsibilities involved in both the professions are much different. Pay scale for Naval Architect is high when compared with Architects. The risk factor involved in work of Naval Architect is also comparatively high when compared to a architect.
