Difference between Biophysics and Geophysics
Biophysics identifies issues related to the structure and dynamics of molecules, cells and tissues in biosystems. This subject also deals with biological motility, energy transformation, biomechanics etc that takes place in biotic environment. Geophysics is the application of physics in matters related to earth. Both these subjects are created from hybridization of different disciplines of Science. Disciplines of science such as Physics and Biology combined together to give the hybrid field of Biophysics where as Geography and Physics fuse to create Geophysics.
Courses and Career Opportunities of Biophysics
Biophysics offers a lot of course and career opportunities to aspirants. There are many Universities in India as well as abroad that offers graduate and postgraduate courses on Biophysics. As Biophysics is an emerging subject, it can open wide range of career possibilities in the upcoming years. A PhD degree holder in biophysics can find job opportunities as Biophysics Research Scientists; Faculty in Biophysics University etc. Biophysics related Industries can offer different job opportunities to both graduates as well as postgraduates in Biophysics. Biophysics graduates can also find job opportunities in
- Forensics Laboratories
- Chemical Companies
- Food-Processing Plants
- Drug Manufacturers
- The Cosmetic Industry
- Manufacturers of Agricultural Chemicals (Fertilizers, Pesticides, etc.)
Biophysics graduates can find job opportunities in well-established organizations such as
- National Institute for Research in Reproductive health (NIRRH)
- All India Institute of Medical Sciences
- Institute of Microbial Technology
- Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR)
- Indian Institute of Science (IISC)
- National Institute of Virology (ICMR)
Courses and Career Opportunities of Geophysics
Geophysics offers a wide variety of course and career opportunities to aspirants. Graduate as well as postgraduate programs are offered on subjects of Physics of the Earth’s interior, Meteorology and Oceanography etc. Some other courses offered on Geophysics include:
- Meteorology
- Marine Geophysics
- Seismology and Earth’s Interior
- Geoelectricity
- Geomagnetism
- Remote Sensing
- Environmental Geophysics
- Advanced Hydrology etc.
Geophysicists can find plenty of job opportunities in areas of exploration of nonrenewable natural resources such as coal, petroleum etc. They can also find jobs in areas of
- Field investigation
- Laboratory studies and experiments
- Data collection from instruments placed below the earth’s surface
- Data collection from satellites hundreds of kilometers above the surface
- Data processing and analysis using some of the world’s most potent supercomputers
- Drilling wells thousands of meters deep
Key differentiators between Biophysics and Geophysics
Biophysics identifies the physical transformations and movements in biotic systems where as geophysics deals with application of physical theory and measurements on earth. Although, Biophysics and Geophysics are related areas of Physics, career, scope, techniques used, application etc. vary to a greater extent.
