The most important subjects for Gate syllabus are Engineering Mathematics and general aptitude. Each of these subjects holds a weightage of 15% which is more than any other topic or subject.
So your main focus should be on these two areas.

I always suggest to start the preparation with standard books and only then practice the old papers.

Some good books for Mathematics are -

Differential calculus : I.A. Meron, Lalji prasad
Integral calculus: I.A. Meron
Discrete Mathematics : Kolman & Bussy
Numerical Method : Jain & Iyenger

Some good books for General aptitude for Gate 2013 preparation are -

Quantitative and verbal reasoning –By R.S. Agarwal

ENGLISH GRAMMAR- By WREN & MARTIN
Quantitative Aptitude Test : By T. S. Jain-Upkar publication
Vocabulary: BARRON’S BOOK -GRE

For the subjects concerned with your branch , electrical engineering these are some good books-

Power Electronics by PS Bhimra

Electrical Engineering Material science by S.P. Seth
Monochrome and colour by R.R. Gulati
Integrated electronics : Analog and Digital Circuit and system by Jacob Millman & Christos C. Halkias

After all these you can start studying the previous year solved gate papers. there are many publications for these like GK publications, Made easy , the gate academy etc.

For more books I am attaching some files. It is a very good list specially for you electrical engineering subjects.
Attached Files
File Type: doc GATE Books for ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.doc(19.0 KB, 112 views)
File Type: doc gate eng. maths books.doc(11.0 KB, 75 views)
File Type: doc GATE Books for General Aptitude.doc(11.5 KB, 126 views)
