Dear sir,
I can suggest you the standard books and authors according to the branch you belong to because various branches like ECE,CSE,IT,EEE,Mechanical have different syllabus not related to each other. There are some common subjects in all the branches like Digital Logic Design,Mathematical methods.

But here are some standard books of some of the subjects

It is advisable that you take a coaching for GATE to crack it in first attempt.

But if you don't want to take any, then you have to work very very hard for that.

You should have a very strong base of the subject...a clear idea of all topics...study for atleast 18 hours a day for the exam.

Take online study materials for getting the pattern, follow previous years solved papers...
You will get them here!

Follow the standard books...don't try to read those books which is not popular for GATE.

Prepare notes chapter wise...while studying, don't leave any doubt, clear your doubts anyhow!

These are some tips for self study....the rest is up to you.

Be confident and dedicated!

You can sit for GATE in your third year of Engineering. GATE is an All India Entrance exam for students who wish to do M.Tech. The GATE score card is valid for 2 years. And there is no age limit for this exam and there is also no limit for the no. of attempts.

I am providing you the links of some pdf files, which you can download and all the topics are of EEE branch!
