The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as a common entrance examination for recruitment to various services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Group 'A' and Group 'B' - Central Services. I. Academic Eligibility The candidate must possess a degree from an Indian University or an educational institution deemed as a University or possess an equivalent qualification. Those in the final year of a degree course can also appear in the Preliminary Examination. II. Other Eligibility Conditions For the IAS and the IPS, the candidate must be a citizen of India. For the other services, a candidate must be either: a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal, or a subject of Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. The candidate must have attained 21 years of age on August 1st of the year of examination and must not have attained 30 years of age on that date. The upper age limit will be relaxed by 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. Re: Which degree is preferred for an IAS aspirants?
For becoming an IAS officer you must appear in an exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission commonly called as UPSC. For appearing in this exam the eligibility criteria required are as follows.
1. You must be a citizen of India. 2. You must have finished your graduation of any discipline from a recognized university of India. 3. Your age must be above 21years and below 30years. Thus for IAS aspirants there is no particular stream of Education required. Any graduation is enough. I would suggest you to choose any of the graduations easy for you to clear. So that you can prepare for the UPSC exams, which is little tougher. |

Re: Which degree is preferred for an IAS aspirants?
The UPSC has analyzed the success rates of candidates of various degrees in the 2009 Civil Services Exam. The annual report is available in their website.
From this, you will notice that among the UG candidates, the success rate is highest for MBBS with a percentage of 18.3. BDS is second with a success rate of 11.6%. BE/BTech, etc candidates had a success rate of 11.3%, while BSc Agri candidates came fourth at 11.1%. Of course, the total no, of appeared candidates were quite less for MBBS and BDS at 420 and 69 respectively. There were 2267 candidates of BE, etc and 72 candidates of BSc Agri. These numbers relate to the main exam and do not have anything to do with the Prelims. The success rate for BA was 5.0%, BCom 5.2% and BSc 4.4%. If you take PGs, MD candidates had a marvellous success rate of 18.8% (3 out of 16) and LLM 13.8% (4 out of 29). I think I have given a fair idea of who has more chances of selection. Please evaluate from your end. The details are available in p 98 of the Annual Report 2010-11 (which is the latest published by UPSC). All the best. |

It never gives importance any specific degree. It is your choice whatever degree you are willing to study just proceed with that and while applying for the exam you can just think of the subjects that were in your studies or you feel comfortable.
