It is Civil Services Examination which you will have to appear to qualify for the Indian Administrative Service. Civil Services Examination is also conducted for Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service etc.

The job of IAS officer is to work as eyes and ears of government during natural disasters. He/she provides accurate ground conditions which leads to rescue operations in situation of floods, tsunami, earthquake etc.

Although the main job criteria of IAS officer is to implement government policy. It means consistently traveling places where policy is being implemented to ensure that there is no irregularity in public funds and everything is going on smoothly.

Coming to your question, all you need is graduation degree. It does not matter how much marks you have obtained in the graduation. So if you have completed graduation then surely you can apply for the Civil Services Examination.

IAS Eligibility

1. You should be Indian to apply for it.

2. bachelor degree in any discipline is required.

3. No minimum marks criteria.

4. Should be at least 21 years old to apply.

5. At the same time less than 30 years old.

6. Although thanks to relaxation, OBC can apply up to 33 years.

7. While SC/ST can apply up to 35 years.

8. There are no physical requirements to worry about.

9. General candidate will get 4 chances to clear IAS exam.

10. OBC will get 7 chances.

11. While no limit for SC/ST.

Selection Procedure

You will first appear for preliminary exam which is conducted in may/june. Its only a qualifying exam to appear for the main examination conducted in August/September. There are two written tests in preliminary and 9 in main exam. In the end you will be called for personal interview.

IAS stands for Indian Administrative Services. It is one of the civil service exam which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The announcement of the exam is generally made in the month of January-February and the exam takes place in the following three stages:-
  1. Phase I: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
  2. Phase II: Mains (Civil Services Mains)
  3. Phase III: Personality test
Now let me tell you that the qualification required for this exam is very simple and uncomplicated as you just need a graduate degree and nothing else. The degree can be attained in any subject of your choice as that is not an important criteria here. But it should be a valid one.

You can also give this exam in your final year as the ones who have already appeared for the final qualifying exam and is waiting for the results to come out are also eligible. But in that case they need to get the results before the Main examination starts.

Age Criteria:- 21-30 years. There is age relaxation available for the OBC/SC/ST/PH category candidates.

For this exam you can apply for only four times if you belong to the general category, seven times if you belong to the OBC category and for unlimited times if you belong to the SC/ST category.

The preliminary exam also known as the CSAT exam forms the basis of all the UPSC exam. Not just IAS but for IPS and IFS as well this screening test is there which needs to be passed to go to the next stage of selection. The marks of this exam is not however counted when declaring the final result. The mains result is what matters the most then.
