GATE is the Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering. It is entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology. The rank scored in GATE exam helps to pursue master's degree in technology from top colleges like IIT, NIT etc and also helps to get job in various Public Sector Undertakings like:

~~Steel Authority of India limited.

If you secure rank within top 400 in your stream, you have good chance of getting a call from any PSU of your stream even if you belong to general category. You can also apply for entrance exams like BSNL JTO, AAI entrance exam etc.
