Its good to start early preparations. You can begin with general awareness section. Other than reading the daily events in newspapers there will be an editorial section. You must read the same daily. Also there are magazines like India Today, Frontline which will help you in this area.

Actually there is no need of specific selection of branch or group in any level that is either completing 10th

or after completing 12th

or after completing B.tech

You can do any course of your wish

I think you are not aware of some eligibility criterion of the syllabus pattern

No worries I'll provide full information regarding IAS

IAS is an central service and also deeply regarded as d most prestigious job..

Like this service there are other 24 services for which a common entrance test is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission)

The main basic eligibility criteria for Civils Service Examination

->Candidate must have 21 years of age

->Candidate must complete at least degree from a recognized Indian University

this is all about the basic eligibility criteria of CSE

As per your qualification if you have completed Degree then definitely you are eligible for the exam..

You can go through the examination code for Civil Service Examination in the official website of UPSC

i.e.
www.upsc.gov.in

For IAS, one need to go through a civil services examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

The minimum academic qualification that a candidate need to have to be eligible for this exam is graduation from a recognized university.

In addition, one should be in the age group of 21-30 years to be eligible for the exam.

So I would suggest you to join graduation in any of the discipline which you are interested and try to get good percentage of marks.

By the time you appear for IAS exam,
-Make sure that you comply with the required eligibility criteria
-Try to be good enough in aptitude and general awareness which are a part of entrance exam.

For updated information on IAS, you can visit the official website of UPSC.

Here it is,

Hello friend,
Its good that you have been preparing for the civil service exam since class 10, but from the year 2011, the format of the examination has changed a bit. The preliminary exam has been replaced by civil service aptitude test (CSAT), but the main examination will remain the way it was.
To give you better idea of the CSAT as well as the main exam, follow the syllabus provided below.

CSAT will comprise of two compulsory papers.
Paper 1
Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian national movement
Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.
Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.
General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change
General science.

Paper 2
Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level),
Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level)
English language comprehension skills (Class X level)

The Main exam comprises of 4 compulsory subjects and Two optional Papers.
The compulsory subjects for the Main exam are
One Indian language,
English,
Essay and
General studies
.

The optional subjects are as follows
Agriculture Mathematics, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Mechanical Engineering Botany, Medical Science, Chemistry, Philosophy, Civil Engineering, Physics, Commerce,Political Science ,Economics ,Psychology Electrical Engineering Public Administration, Geography, Sociology, Geology, Statistics, Indian,History, Zoology,Law.

Now, since you you know the syllabus, you will have to prepare accordingly.
To do well in the exam, you should join coaching classes. A good coaching center have experts who guides the student in an organised way and help them to crack the exam.
Apart from this, you must have a look at the previous years question papers available on the official website of UPSC.

You can choose any course of your interest for your Graduation level. You can either choose B.tech,B.Sc,BBM,BBA..etc or any other course after your 12th since preparation has nothing to do with the course you have selected for Graduation level i.e after your 12th.Instead you just need to follow some simple steps to be successful in the CSAT examination.

1.First of all go through the syllabus part of both Preliminary and Main examination.

2.Prepare a time table mentioning which subject or topic to be gone through and the specific date.

3.Since your a 10th Class student you need to follow books of NCERT,Goyal Brother's Prakashan of Class 9th and 10th(CBSE and ICSE level).Am sure that thses books will definitely help you in the preparation part.

4.Maintain a clear cut idea about the examination and try to prepare a material about various topics in the examination.

Going through these steps will definitely help in the examination. Here i have attached the Syllabus part of Preliminary hence go through it.

First you should complete your graducation.

Some tips for preparing IAS:-

you should 1. Read newspaper daily

for all subjects geo for class 11th and class 12th as well
history of class 11th atleast.
4. read GK books.
5. watching channels like discovery helps a lot in the long run.
try to understand things, and work hard is the only mantra
for success in IAS.

Then you have to appear for the exam.

Exam pattern:-

!) the first is a screening exam full of multiple choice.

2) if you get selected You can attend the mains

3) then you will be called for interview.

4)the marks of the main and interview are considered for the FINAL rank list.

5) those who are included in the FIRST 100 get IAS.

THE GENERAL TREND
ONE year preparation is necessary
Join a very good coaching institute.
But most make it the second or the third time
If you are in school then start your preparation today itself

All the best

You can choose any stream after completing 12th because to become a IAS officer You need a bachelor degree from a recognised colleges and university and your age should between 21 to 30 years. The upper age relaxation is only applicable for SC, ST And for OBC candidates.

For IAS, You have to appear for Civil Services examination, this examination is conducted by UPSC every year, the exam are conducted in two stages, Priliminery exam and Main exam and after clear both the exam, you are eligible to apply for Interview. And after clear Interview, you will become IAS officer.

The notification of civil services examination are published on the UPSC official website and also in employment newspaper. So, please check the official website in the mont of Feb, because notification of this exam are announced in the month of feb.

So, please dont worry, just choose any stream and course after 12th, because any graduate candidates between the age of 21 to 30 years are eligible for IAS. For more information, visit official website of UPSC.

It good to here that you are preparing for IAS form 10th onwards.

If you want to become an IAS officer then you have to appear in Civil service entrance exam conducted by UPSC every year.

You must have age in between 21 to 30 year not more than this. And Educational Qualification at least graduation degree from a recognized university.

Only graduation degree is required for IAS entrance exam. So you can opt any graduation course.

Selection procedure of IAS:

1. CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) if you clear this stage than you would get a call for

2. Mains Examination and if you qualify this stage also then

3. you have to face Interview.

For cracking IAS exam you should have grip over current affair , general knowledge, history, geography, aptitude etc...

If you have keen desire to qualify IAS exam then make a time schedule of your study and try to give your 100% efforts toward its preparation and it need six months of full dedication.

So don't worry just keep on hardworking and surely you will qualify.

All the Best...

I wonder what you could have prepared for IAS exam because :
IAS is not a exam........... it is one of the cadre which is alloted after you have cleared Civil service exam conducted by UPSC.

So at present, there is no need for serious preparation, you only need to aware of current affairs, technical developments, general awareness.

These are very open ended topics which have no particular book.
Subscribe to some good magazines and newsletters from civil service blogs from internet.
These are sufficient while you are doing your graduation side by side.

Well after reading to all of your answers I have understood what I must do. I am in 11th std and I don't actually have a grip over current affairs and G.K. I wanted to know that if I start reading newspapers and magazines then will I be able to perform very well in the Civil exams or am I late in my preparation? My second question is that, do they ask questions about the news which are 5-10years old? I also wanted to know that which current affair books should I read and what all is necessary?
Does vocabulary play a major role in this?
Do I need to be very fluent in English?
What all is needed in a good essay?
These all are my queries, please guide me. Thanks a lot

Best Regards.

After completion of Graduation you can apply for IAS/IPS examination.

Any Graduate can apply for IAS/IPS exam if the Graduation is from a recognised University.

Age Limit :

General Category - 21 to 30 years

OBC Category - 21 to 33 years

SC/ST Category - 21 to 35 years

The examination first stage will be preliminary test which will have objective type questions from General studies and Aptitude test.

After passing Prelims you will be eligible for Mains exam in which you have to choose optional subjects according to your interest.

Mains will be descriptive type and you also have to appear for interview.

If you are doing Graduation then you must make clear which subjects you want to choose in IAS Exam because it is one of the most critical point.

So keep your preparation upto date and complete your Graduation.

There are limited number of attempts for General and OBC with 4 and 7 attempts respectively.

For SC/ST there is no such limit. So you need to carefully apply for the exam if you are a General and OBC category candidate.
