Its good to start early preparations. You can begin with general awareness section. Other than reading the daily events in newspapers there will be an editorial section. You must read the same daily. Also there are magazines like India Today, Frontline which will help you in this area.

Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
For IAS, one need to go through a civil services examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).
The minimum academic qualification that a candidate need to have to be eligible for this exam is graduation from a recognized university. In addition, one should be in the age group of 21-30 years to be eligible for the exam. So I would suggest you to join graduation in any of the discipline which you are interested and try to get good percentage of marks. By the time you appear for IAS exam, -Make sure that you comply with the required eligibility criteria -Try to be good enough in aptitude and general awareness which are a part of entrance exam. For updated information on IAS, you can visit the official website of UPSC. Here it is, http://www.upsc.gov.in/ |

Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
Hello friend,
Its good that you have been preparing for the civil service exam since class 10, but from the year 2011, the format of the examination has changed a bit. The preliminary exam has been replaced by civil service aptitude test (CSAT), but the main examination will remain the way it was. To give you better idea of the CSAT as well as the main exam, follow the syllabus provided below. CSAT will comprise of two compulsory papers. Paper 1 Current events of national and international importance History of India and Indian national movement Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc. Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc. General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change General science. Paper 2 Comprehension Interpersonal skills including communication skills Logical reasoning and analytical ability Decision making and problem solving General mental ability Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level) English language comprehension skills (Class X level) The Main exam comprises of 4 compulsory subjects and Two optional Papers. The compulsory subjects for the Main exam are One Indian language, English, Essay and General studies. The optional subjects are as follows Agriculture Mathematics, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Mechanical Engineering Botany, Medical Science, Chemistry, Philosophy, Civil Engineering, Physics, Commerce,Political Science ,Economics ,Psychology Electrical Engineering Public Administration, Geography, Sociology, Geology, Statistics, Indian,History, Zoology,Law. Now, since you you know the syllabus, you will have to prepare accordingly. To do well in the exam, you should join coaching classes. A good coaching center have experts who guides the student in an organised way and help them to crack the exam. Apart from this, you must have a look at the previous years question papers available on the official website of UPSC. |

Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
You can choose any course of your interest for your Graduation level. You can either choose B.tech,B.Sc,BBM,BBA..etc or any other course after your 12th since preparation has nothing to do with the course you have selected for Graduation level i.e after your 12th.Instead you just need to follow some simple steps to be successful in the CSAT examination.
1.First of all go through the syllabus part of both Preliminary and Main examination. 2.Prepare a time table mentioning which subject or topic to be gone through and the specific date. 3.Since your a 10th Class student you need to follow books of NCERT,Goyal Brother's Prakashan of Class 9th and 10th(CBSE and ICSE level).Am sure that thses books will definitely help you in the preparation part. 4.Maintain a clear cut idea about the examination and try to prepare a material about various topics in the examination. Going through these steps will definitely help in the examination. Here i have attached the Syllabus part of Preliminary hence go through it. |

Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
I wonder what you could have prepared for IAS exam because :
IAS is not a exam........... it is one of the cadre which is alloted after you have cleared Civil service exam conducted by UPSC. So at present, there is no need for serious preparation, you only need to aware of current affairs, technical developments, general awareness. These are very open ended topics which have no particular book. Subscribe to some good magazines and newsletters from civil service blogs from internet. These are sufficient while you are doing your graduation side by side. |

You can first do graduation according to the subjects you took in class 12th and depending upon your interests because this is the minimum educational qualification to become an IAS officer. To become an IAS officer your general awareness should be very strong and also history and civics.Daily read newspapers as well as various educative magazines. Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
Well after reading to all of your answers I have understood what I must do. I am in 11th std and I don't actually have a grip over current affairs and G.K. I wanted to know that if I start reading newspapers and magazines then will I be able to perform very well in the Civil exams or am I late in my preparation? My second question is that, do they ask questions about the news which are 5-10years old? I also wanted to know that which current affair books should I read and what all is necessary?
Does vocabulary play a major role in this? Do I need to be very fluent in English? What all is needed in a good essay? These all are my queries, please guide me. Thanks a lot Best Regards. |

Re: What should I do after 12th so that if helps in my IAS preparation?
After completion of Graduation you can apply for IAS/IPS examination.
Any Graduate can apply for IAS/IPS exam if the Graduation is from a recognised University. Age Limit : General Category - 21 to 30 years OBC Category - 21 to 33 years SC/ST Category - 21 to 35 years The examination first stage will be preliminary test which will have objective type questions from General studies and Aptitude test. After passing Prelims you will be eligible for Mains exam in which you have to choose optional subjects according to your interest. Mains will be descriptive type and you also have to appear for interview. If you are doing Graduation then you must make clear which subjects you want to choose in IAS Exam because it is one of the most critical point. So keep your preparation upto date and complete your Graduation. There are limited number of attempts for General and OBC with 4 and 7 attempts respectively. For SC/ST there is no such limit. So you need to carefully apply for the exam if you are a General and OBC category candidate. For more information visit http://www.upsc.gov.in |
