What qualification is needed for being an IPS officer? Which books should be referred for entrance preparation?


Dear Whom so ever,

Kindly give me the full details of the qualification required to become an IPS officer? Also tell me what all the books are to be referred for IPS entrance exam?

Qualification required for IPS Officer :
  • Candidate must have passed graduation from any recognised university.
  • There is no minimum percentage criteria.
  • Age of candidate must be from 21 to 30 years. Relaxation in age is also there as per government norms.

To become an IPS officer, you must have to appear in IPS examination which is conducted by UPSC every year. Eligibility criteria required to appear in IPS examination is mentioned below :-

1. You must be a citizen of India.

2. You must have obtained a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university.

3. You must have attained the minimum age of 21 years and must not have crossed the maximum age of 30 years. Upper age relaxation is applicable to reserved category candidates as per government rules.

IPS stands for Indian Police Service.

If you have completed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university then you are eligible for IPS exam.

Your age should be in between 21 years to 30 years for general candidates. Age relaxation is given below -

5 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates
3 years relaxation for OBC Candidates
10 years relaxation for PHC candidates
5 years relaxation for Ex-serviceman

Qualification Needed:

# Nationality
# Age Limit
# Educational Qualification
# Physical Standard

-> Nationality standard states that candidate should have a citizenship in India.

-> Age limit needed is 21-30 years for general category candidate and there are relaxation for other category candidates.

-> For SC/ST it is 21-35 years and for OBC it is 21-33 years.

-> Educational qualification needed for IPS exam is, candidate should have completed a degree from a recognized university.

-> Eye Standards for IPS:



If you satisfy them all then you can apply for the IPS Exam. There are certain amount attempts which are allowed for IPS exam and they are:
  • For General : 6
  • For OBC : 9
  • For SC/ST : No Limit

Candidates are selected through:
  1. Written Exam
  2. Personal Interview
  3. Physical Test
