I have done my BSc in Biotechnology from Mumbai University and thereafter joined for an M.Tech degree in Bioinformatics from D.Y.Patil University (deemed), Navi Mumbai via a private entrance test. I am currently doing my final thesis semester. First of all, am I eligible to give the GATE for PhD? I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics-related research which is majorly based on IT & Computer applications. However, I dont hold any degree in IT or CS so far but have learnt IT subjects during the M.Tech course.
If I do qualify for GATE, which subject do I opt for (Biotech/IT/CompSci), since there is no GATE for Bioinformatics?

For GATE you need M.Sc Biotechnology which is not the case with you. You have done M.Tech Bioinformatics which is not the subject available in GATE. Hence, it will be difficult for you to become eligible for Biotech or IT or Computer Science GATE.

You can apply for admission in private universities which offer Ph.D in your subject through their own entrance exam.
