Kargil is a district of Ladakh area of Kashmir in India, the district lies near the line of control facing Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s Balitistan to the west. The district is bounded by the Kashmir Valley to the south and along with Dras Valleys, Wakha and Suru, Zanskar is a pert of the Kargil District. In the year 1999, Kargil was the place of conflict between Pakistan and India and it is the least populous district among the 22 districts in the state of Jammu & Kashmir according to the survey conducted in the year 2011.

The district is nestled in the Himalayas thereby giving it a cool temperature, summers in the district are warm with cool nights and winters are cold and long with temperatures often dropping to -40oC. The whole district is spread over 5439 Square meters and the River of Suru flows through the district. The district of Kargil consists of nine blocks namely Lungnuk, Zanskar, Taisuroo, Sankoo, Gund Mangalpur- Trespone, Shaker-Chiktan, Shargole, Kargil and Drass and each of these blocks consists of many panchayats.

Name of the district:

The term Kargil is derived from two words namely Khar and rKhil. The term Khar indicates castle and rKil means center and according to many critics, the term Kargil has been derived from the terms Gar and Khil, which indicates the meaning of ‘any where’ and ‘central place’ respectively. This supports the fact the district lies in equidistant from Padum, Leh, Skardo and Srinagar at around 200 kms.

Government Degree College at Kargil came into existence in the year 1995 and the college has earned recognition from the University Grants Commission under sections 2 (f) and 12 (b). The college offers arts, science and commerce courses with affiliation from the University of Kashmir. The college is one among the colleges that are permanently affiliated to the University of Kashmir and the college is known for the best quality education offered.

Even though, Kargil district has only a single higher education institution, most of the students of the nearby districts are also benefitted from this college since it offers the best education at affordable cost.
