Mon District is located in the Northeastern part of the state of Nagaland and the district is one of the nine districts functioning in the state of Nagaland. The district is bounded by the Tuensang District of Nagaland to its south, Longleng District to its south-west, Myanmar district to its east, the state of Assam to its West and the state of Andhra Pradesh to its north.

The district was named as one of the 250 most backward districts in the nation by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The district is receiving grants from the Backward Regions Grand Fund Programme along with three other districts in the state of Nagaland. The district has a literacy rate of 56.6% and a population of nearly 2,50,000 people. Some of the prominent places of attractions in this district are Shangnyu Village, Chui Village, Longwa Village, Veda Peak and Naganimora. Wangkhao Government College, Mon:

Wangkhao Government College was previously called as Alamkaphen College and the college was established with the objective of fulfilling the need for a higher education institution in the district of Mon. the college was inaugurated on the 5th of July 1983 and official government orders for its functioning were issued within two months of its inauguration. Even though, initially the college was known as Alamkaphen College, it was renamed as Arts College subsequently. The Government of Nagaland took over the college in the year 1990 on the 1st of February, the college got its present name. The college began its operations from the Government High School during afternoon sessions. At present the college offers degree level courses in arts stream and B.A. (honors) course is offered in the following subjects:

Political science

English

The current student-strength of the institution is 639 and there are 23 lecturers in the college. Twenty-five ministerial staff are also working for the college.

In addition to this single government institution functioning in the district of Mon, the government of Nagaland is planning to introduce five new polytechnic colleges at different places in the state of Nagaland. Out of these five colleges, one government polytechnic college is going to be established in the city of Aboi at Mon District.

With a view to encourage technical education, government of Nagaland has also come forward to offer scholarships to technical students to a tune of Rs.1.59 crore and this amount has been distributed among 2500 students, who were sent for different courses outside Nagaland for professional and technical reasons.

Thus, with the sincere efforts made by the Government of Nagaland for the development of educational standard in different district of the state, the educational development of the district of Mon can also be ensured. With the single government institution presently offering education under arts stream, more higher educational institutions are expected to be introduced in the district in the future.
