Varanasi, which is also called as Banaras or Benaras is a city located in the banks of River Ganges in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Medical college:
Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital located in Varanasi, came into existence in the year 1965 and the college is offering Ayurvedic medical course through its association with Sampuranand Sanskrit University located in the city of Varanasi. The college is permitted to admit 40 students per year to the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medical Sciences course and for seeking admission to this course, candidates must have completed their higher secondary with chemistry, biology and physics subjects. The duration of the BAMS course offered by the college is five-and-half years.
Arts, Science & Commerce College:
Government Girls Degree College located in the city of Varanasi came into existence in the year 2000 and the college offers the following Bachelor of Arts courses with affiliation from the Vir Bahadur Purvanchal University:

Other College:
Government Sanskrit College, Varanasi came into existence in the year 1791 and this is the first college to be established in the city of Varanasi. From the year 1958, the college was merged with the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University. The college initially offered only UG course in Sanskrit and PG course was introduced from the year 1857.
Polytechnic College:
Government Girls Polytechnic, Varanasi came into existence in the year 1990-91 and initially the college offered diploma course in electronics engineering alone. Later, the college began to offer diploma in the following subjects with approval from the AICTE and Board of Technical Education of the Government of Uttar Pradesh:

• Information technology
• Textile designing
In addition to the above-mentioned government colleges, there are also constituent units of Banaras University in this city, which is a central university. Some of the constituent units of the Banaras Hindu University are Institute of Technology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development and these institutions work under the control of Banaras University, which is a public university in nature.
