Government Polytechnic College came into existence in the year 1956 and the college was established by the Adimjati Shiksha Ashtram to offer technical education to the students belonging to the north-eastern part of the nation. The institution was taken over by the government of Manipur in the year 1972 and after that the college got its present name. The college is located in the city of Imphal and right from its inception, the institution was affiliated to the Council of Technical Education of the state of Assam. However, after the change of government policy, the college came under Manipur University from the year 1987.

Courses offered:

Government Polytechnic College offers the following three-year diploma courses:

• Diploma in

o Electronics & Communication Engineering

o Mechanical Engineering

o Electrical Engineering

o Civil Engineering

The institute also offers two-year diploma course in pharmacy.

Eligibility for admission:

Admission of students to the Government Polytechnic College is done based on the performance of the students in the concerned entrance test held by the Principal of the college or by the Controller of Technical Education of the state of Manipur upon fulfillment of the following eligibility conditions:

• For getting into the diploma in engineering courses offered by the college, candidates must have completed their class X examination or its equivalent examination in single sitting as recognized by the Secondary Examination Board of the state of Manipur

• For Diploma in Pharmacy course, candidates who have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with mathematics or biology, chemistry and physics papers in a single sitting are eligible to apply

• For getting into these courses, candidates must be in the age group of 15 and 22 years as on the 1st of July 2010 and the upper age limit is realxable by three year for PH/SC and ST candidates.

• Candidates must be domicile of the state of Manipur by Birth and their parents must have been continuously residing in the state of Manipur for not less than 20 years or their parents should be an employee of the state government of Manipur or a body owned by the Government of Manipur

• In addition, candidates should also be medically and physically fit and should be free from any diseases

Entrance examination:

Entrance test will be conducted for admission to engineering and pharmacy courses. Entrance examination for Diploma in engineering course will have questions from mathematics, physics and chemistry subjects, while entrance exam for diploma in pharmacy course will have questions from physics, chemistry and biology subjects.
