Horticulturist - How to become a Horticulturist?
The farming of garden plants, fruits, flora, vegetables and berries along with, shrubs and trees is called as Horticulture. People who practice horticulture are known as Horticulturists. They learn about the many types of plant species and experiments on them for the breeding of plants, crop cultivation and production, plant reproduction, plant physiology/biochemistry etc. Detailed studies on genetic engineering of the plant types are also conducted. There are many colleges in India which offer courses in Horticulture. Those candidates who complete their course in horticulture successfully can find employment as scientist, administrators, teachers, managers, therapists; garden assistants etc.
Candidates who wish to go for higher studies can opt for courses like B.Sc horticulture, M.Sc Horticulture, PhD Horticulture and Post Graduate diploma in Horticulture (PGDH).
Qualifying Exam
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research carries out an entrance examination for the admittance of candidates. In order to apply for this exam, the candidate must have cleared the Higher Secondary School Certificate Exam.
Who is eligible to apply?
The candidates must be Indian citizens. They must be in between 18 to 23 years at the time of applying. The candidates must have cleared the 10+2 class with both Physics and Chemistry and also either mathematics or biology. in addition to agriculture and home science subjects. The applicants must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in the exam. Those applicants belonging to the backward communities or to the physically handicapped category should score atleast 40 % marks.
How to prepare for exam and interview ?
The candidates who are appearing for the horticulture examination and interview should have a good knowledge about the topic. They can prepare by writing test papers or exams. This will help them time themselves. They can also collect information or details from the internet or from questions papers of the previous years. Details regarding horticulture and its many aspects can be gained from magazines too. Students can also prepare by consulting the alumni of colleges. The candidates must make sure that they answer to the point at the time of the interview.
