Alagappa University was formed by a special act of the Tamil Nadu Government in the year 1985 with the objective of dissemination and development of knowledge and fostering research in different branches of learning. The university is recognized by the UGC and it is accredited with ‘A’ grade status by the NAAC.

The colleges coming under the jurisdiction of this university is spread over the districts of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga. The university is located at the city called Karaikudi in the state of Tamil Nadu and it is easily accessible from Trichy and Madurai Airport within two hours.
