Among the different universities set up in the state of Kerala, Calicut university also called as University Of Calicut is the second oldest university, which was established in the year 1968 aiming at developing people in northern part of Kerala by encouraging research in different developmental areas with main focus on culture, arts and technology of Kerala.

The campus of the university situated at Malappuram district 24km south of the city of Calicut is the important center for educational activities. The campus includes 21 postgraduate departments of research and teaching and other centers like library, computer centre, educational multimedia research centre, academic staff college, school of distance education, pareeksha bhavan and university administration. Initially, the university had only 54 affiliated colleges. The university has extension centers at Vatakara, Calicut and Thrissur. Thrissur center got its name after the famous economist late Dr. John Mathai and this center includes school of fine arts & drama and department of economics. Calicut center conducts courses in fashion design, costume design and health sciences and it also includes University Students’ centre. Vatakara centre includes postgraduate departments of research and studies and they are centre for West Asian Studies, kunjali marakkar center and centre for folk lore studies. In five districts coming under its jurisdiction, the university has set up teacher education and information centers to reach out the students easily.
